Proxy Vs VPN

March 23, 2010

What is the difference between a Proxy and VPN?

Well to simply put it, you have to type proxy details into the software you’re using and that you want all your internet traffic to go over, so if you were using Skype to do VOIP calls where restricted, you could type in the proxy details into skype and it would push all the traffic over the proxy.

The same rule also applies for web browsers is that you have to enter the proxy details into the browser you’re using for it to start using the traffic over the proxy.

Are Proxy Servers Safe?

Hell NO they are not secure of safe and your data could easily be monitored by the web server or by a 3 party fairly easy, for a 3 party to monitor the proxy log, then it all depend on how the proxy is set up, but everything is possible with these proxy server.
Also, proxy servers are known all over the world and listed as such, they are not that reliable and not the best solution… so what is the best solution you ask? i can simple say a VPN is the best solution.

Are VPN servers safe?

Most VPN services out there are going to be secure as the standard encryption is 128bit to tunnel your whole internet connection to the VPN server.

What a VPN does is elimenate the need to set up each software service, Skype, MSN, ICQ, browsers etc individually, once your connected to a VPN ALL your traffic goes over and there is no other configuration needed to be done.
Long and short of it, a VPN is a much more efficient and effective way to do what a proxy is doing, just much better.
